ANNUAL WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY UNITED LUNCHEON

Benefits: The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas

Guest Speaker: Actress Fran Drescher
What to expect: Women’s Philanthropy returns to center stage with the annual United Luncheon featuring guest speaker Fran Drescher. Considered to be one of Las Vegas’ most anticipated events, this year’s luncheon promises to bring together the community’s most generous women for an unforgettable afternoon. Each year the Women’s Philanthropy Council takes on a Mitzvah Project, mitzvah means an act of human kindness, and this year’s drive focuses on shoes. The United Luncheon Committee is asking guests to bring in new pairs of men’s, women’s or children’s shoes that will be donated to various local charities in need.
Highlights: The ready-to-wear fashion show will be presented by the Wynn and Encore Esplanade shops. Modeling the designer clothing will be local philanthropists and community leaders. To add to the excitement, a large selection of gifts will be featured in a silent auction with the Ultimate Gift Opportunity provided by Van Cleef & Arpels.

53RD ANNUAL MARDI GRAS BALL

Benefits: Women’s Health and Breast Cancer Services at St. Rose Dominican Hospitals

Honoring: Breast Cancer Survivors
What to expect: The Mardi Gras Ball is the signature fundraising event of St. Rose and its Health Foundation and is the longest running fundraising ball in Southern Nevada. Festivities include a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by dinner with interactive and live auctions, as well as an afterglow event.
Highlights:Guests will delight in a wonderful line-up of entertainers including Earl Turner, the Aussie Motown sensation — Human Nature, George Wallace and Legends in Concert.
About the organization: St. Rose Dominican Hospitals are Southern Nevada’s only not-for-profit, religiously affiliated hospital system. The Maternal Child Care Units and the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Centers of Excellence provide women a wide array of classes and programs aimed at enriching physical, emotional and spiritual health. Community outreach programs, such as the R.E.D. (Responsible Early Detection) Rose program, provide free clinical breast exams, mammograms, ultrasounds, surgical consultations and biopsies to women (and men) 49 and younger who lack adequate health care coverage or financial means to obtain them.

About the organization: The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health has created a highly specialized clinical center to advance the research, early detection and treatment of patients with neurological diseases including Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The goal is to prevent the disabling symptoms of chronic brain diseases and to prolong healthy, vital aging in people at risk for dementia or cognitive disorders.

PAINT THE TOWN RED

Honorees: Carolyn Goodman, who will receive the Florence Lee Jones Humanitarian Award and Dedee Nave for the Lifetime Community Achievement Award.
What to expect: Kick-off the evening with plenty of cocktails and take advantage of the great opportunities of the silent auction including spa treatments, weekend getaways, golf outings and ‘The Supper Club’ which includes 12 gift cards, one for every month of the year, to high-end restaurants throughout the valley. To be followed by dinner and dancing, and later a program honoring local leaders and members who have contributed to the Las Vegas community.

Tuition assistance is committed to making that experience a reality for as many students as possible and is available for families that qualify financially. Forty percent of the current student body receives some sort of aid.

About the organization: Chefs for Kids, Inc. is a joint venture of local chefs (American Culinary Federation of Chefs of Las Vegas) and the University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension. The goal of the program is to eliminate malnutrition and hunger through education and awareness.

10TH ANNUAL GOVERNOR’S BLACK TIE INVITATIONAL

Benefits: Southern Highlands Golf Club Charitable Foundation
Setting: Southern Highlands Country Club

Honorees: Jim and Joan Hammer will be presented with the Governor’s Philanthropist of the Year Award.
What to expect: Celebrating its Silver Anniversary and a decade of giving back to the community, the 10th Annual Governor’s Black-Tie Invitational will be hosted by Governor Jim Gibbons along with Garry Goett of Southern Highlands, and will benefit a variety of charities throughout Southern Nevada.
Highlights: The weekend of activities will kick off with the Governor’s Black Tie Gala on Thursday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m., featuring a special dinner, live entertainment, and a variety of marquee silent and live auction items as well as awards presentation to this year’s honorees.
Following the first round of tournament play on Friday, April 9, golfers and their guests are invited to the Governor’s Grand Bash, featuring a special private, live performance by John Fogerty. The weekend wraps up on Saturday, April 10, with the final round of golf and a special luncheon for the ladies, followed by an awards presentation at Southern Highlands Golf Club.

About the organization: The Southern Highlands Golf Club Charitable Foundation established the annual Governor’s Black-Tie Invitational as a special golf and social event that contributes to the Southern Highlands Boys and Girls Club, Assistance League of Las Vegas, Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer, Opportunity Village, Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, Children’s Heart Foundation, Break the Chain Foundation and Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada. 2010 NEVADA MEDAL DINNER

What to expect: Cocktail reception, dinner and presentation of the 2010 Nevada Medal.
Highlights: The majority of the program will focus on a presentation by National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Dr. Ballard, one of the most accomplished and well known of the world’s deep-sea explorers, he is best known for his historic discovery of the sunken R.M.S. Titanic.
Who you might see there: The event is generally attended by a wide variety of prominent Nevada legislators. Past awards recipients include Francis Sellers Collins, James E. Hansen, Susan Lindquist, Donald Grayson and Harold Mooney.
About the organization: Proceeds of the event will go to the Desert Research Institute Foundation. The non-profit organization raises funds to conduct research in an effort to solve the earth’s environmental problems. Currently their focus is on renewable energy programs, water quality in West Africa, as well as a number of projects dedicated to helping the military understand desert conditions

THE HEART BALL

There will be a reception and silent auction followed by dinner and live auction as well as an inspiring survivor video. Festivities will continue with honoree recognitions as well as music and dancing.
Who you might see there: More than 600 guests are expected to attend, including corporate and medical sponsors, physicians and community leaders.
About the organization: The emphasis of this year’s event is raising awareness for congenital heart defects. Funds raised will go toward improving treatment, advocating for better health, reaching out to high risk populations, supporting research, providing CPR training, education and programs for men, women and children.

About the organization: Nathan Adelson Hospice is the only non-profit program in Southern Nevada formed to provide quality care and compassionate support for patients who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and a life expectancy that can be measured in weeks or months, rather than years.
