TAKING TIME FOR A NOONER
Lest you think all Truly Scrumptious does is fritter about the Las Vegas Valley dining hither and yon she wants to set the record straight. Due to the occupational hazards of routinely sampling fabulous cuisine throughout Southern Nevada so frequently there is much in the way of exercise performed on a routine basis.
Two new lunchtime workout opportunities recently presented themselves and always a giver, Truly Scrumptious wanted to share.
Body in Mind Pilates Studio is offering a 30-minute Power Workout/Lunch combo class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12:15 or 1 p.m. at Drift Spa, Palms Place. Nina Waldman, owner of the studio, is the instructor and she puts you through the paces. Yours Truly took the class and was a huffing, puffing, and panting as there were a series of exercises that really gets the heart rate up.
The class begins with a full body warm-up and intensifies with cardio conditioning using jump ropes, bands, plyometric jumps and drills, medicine balls and agility ladder. Next up is strengthening exercises, such as squats, lunges and push-ups. Ten minutes of either Mat Pilates or Yoga then follows along with abdominal exercises and stretches to complete the workout.
Waldman has thought of everything for those interested in squeezing in a quick workout at lunchtime. Following the workout, shower facilities are available in the spa area and the lunches are conveniently boxed to go. The lunches are provided by Simon Restaurant and include healthy options like sushi, turkey sandwiches, and yogurt parfaits. The cost of the class is $30; to sign up go to www.bodyinmindpilatesstudio.com or phone 702.531.2639.
For a workout so powerful that UFC’s Frank Mir engages in it, head over to Pacific Fitness Equipment in Summerlin for a 30-minute Power Plate class that takes place at noon. For the unknowing, a Power Plate is a machine that vibrates causing instability in the human body so with each vibration the body is forced to perform reflexive muscle actions multiple times per second. Yours Truly took a ride on one of the machines for a ½-hour workout and felt the pain in her gluteus maximus for two days.
According to Peter Oh, owner of Pacific Fitness Equipment, acceleration training on Power Plate equipment offers a host of benefits, ranging from an immediate improvement in blood circulation, to a variety of other measurable outcomes such as increased muscle strength and flexibility, improved range of motion, decreased cellulite, increased bone mineral density, reduced pain and soreness and faster recovery.
After joining the studio, Power Plate classes are $35 per class with unlimited classes priced at $295 per month. For those in the Henderson area, Pacific Fitness will roll-out classes at their Anthem studio by the end of March. www.pacificfitnesslv.com
