Move Over Swine Flu, We’re Beggin’ For Bacon

7 years, 4 months ago 0

TS Pigs in a BlanketThe recent Swine Flu mania has Truly Scrumptious yelping like a wild piggy for a passel of pork primed products. And even though the Swine Flu has basically become a non-event, Truly’s appetite for the tasty morsels has not gone unabated and we have been on the hunt with plenty of success.

Las Vegas Chef Kerry Simon has made the ordinary grilled cheese sandwich into a labor of bacon love with a smattering of molten cheese including Fontina, Camembert, and Aged Cheddar on sourdough bread with crispy bacon, of course. It’s on his Simon lunch menu for $14 at Palms Place.

Other timeless classics that have been updated via cooking lessons from Porky the Pig can also be found at local eateries. Pigs in a Blanket, $11, are a fixture at Fix restaurant in the Bellagio. As are Adult Tater tots with Bacon and Brie, $10, at sister restaurant Stack at Mirage.

Envy The Steakhouse in the Renaissance Hotel is all about makin’ the bacon lovers happy with two signature bars. Their Signature Masher Bar features three tempting mashed potato choices: Garlic, $8; Truffle $11; and you guessed it – Bacon and Gruyere Cheese, $10; or a tasting of the trio for $16. Envy also has a sensationally Signature Mac & Cheese Bar with a trio of creamy choices that include: Three Cheeses, $11; Truffle $11; and our favorite Bacon and Gruyere Cheese, $10. And, yes, you can get a tasting size of all three.

Local food critic and celebrity chef favorite Settebello pizza in Henderson has their signature pie of Crushed Tomatoes, Pancetta, Wood Oven Sausage, Roasted Mushrooms, Pine nuts, Mozzarella, Basil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, $12.99, that is full of pork nuggets.

Vosges Haut-Chocolat in the Forum Shops at Caesars has even been seduced by the love of bacon with Mo’s Bacon Bar. It’s a sinful wallop of Applewood smoked bacon, Alder wood smoked salt in deep milk chocolate that even Miss Piggy would find divine. Also, for those who like a little savory with their sweet, www.lollyphile.com has Maple-Bacon Lollipops with pure Vermont maple syrup, 4 for $10.

And although this one scares the dickens out of us, we were truly intrigued with Bacon Lip Balm from J&D’s (http://store.baconsalt.com/JDs-Bacon-Flavored-Lip-Balm_p_0-40.html). We would have given it a whirl but were too frightened we would end up nibbling our lips down to nubs.

And, finally, there’s no better way to finish off any meal whether bacon is in the mix or not than with Uncle Oinker’s Savory Bacon Mints, set of two is $4.95, or with his Bacon Floss, $4.95. Both are found at www.mcphee.com.

As for future flu scares, if we could only get so lucky as to be overtaken by an epidemic of the Chocolate Flu — the world would truly be a sweeter place.
